20240121. PATH 1. Enough depressing redevelopment shots! Been exploring the PATH and connecting malls lately so here’s a series of interior shots from the largely postmodern PATH. Can you guess where?
20240120. Notice 10. The spectacular mid-century modern office building at 505 University (Shell Oil Building, Marani and Morris, 1958) may be demolished and rebuilt with 7 fewer floors (added 8 years after completion) and 50 more on top. That’s 3 of 5 ‘add a building on top’ proposals on University with 1 completed at 488 University.
20240119. Notice 9. There’s is also a proposal to add 33 storeys on top of 200 University Avenue (John B. Parkin Associates, 1961) while maintaining the existing facades. Will the materials be new?
20240118. Notice 8. There’s a proposal to add 35 storeys and widen the Padulo Building (Sigmund D.F. Reszetnik, 1968) at Yonge and St. Clair while maintaining and complimenting the existing facade. I like that the hideous ground level addition will be removed and improved.
20240117. Notice 7. The McLaughlin Planetarium (Allward and Gouinlock, 1968) will make way for the impressive @uoft U of T Centre for Civilizations, Cultures, and Cities.
20240116. Notice 6. Parkdale Library (Gordon Adamson, 1964) will be replaced by affordable housing at a new community hub with a larger library and community centre.
20240115. Notice 5. I want to re-emphasize that 522 University Ave is an impressive late-moderm office building (1972). There is no way that redevelopment will even come close to the artistry exhibited in this building, right wzmh architects?
20240114. Notice 4. Something is missing at the NE corner of Ossington and Dupont. Oh yeah, one of my favourite industrial buildings – the 102 year-old 888 Dupont. I was shocked to see this empty corner. Back to threatened modernism tomorrow.
20240113. Notice 3. 522 University Ave is an impressive John B. Parkin office building (1972) but there are plans to reclad the building and add another 47 storeys – similar to what happened at 488 university.
20240112. Notice 2. 123 Edward St is a beautiful mid-century modern office building (1964) but there is a proposal for two 72 storey buildings on the site by Crown Realty Partners and Turner Fleischer Architects. Notice the ‘Notice’ sign which will appear in every photo.
20240110. On the block north of Waldron Tower are the two wings of the Louise D. Acton Building (1963). Together these two buildings are an impressive strip of mid-century modernism.
20240109. Kingston’s Waldron Tower (1968) is a fantastic example of mid-century modern architecture IV. I love how three different textures of concrete culminate in a projecting curve.
20240105. The King East Medical Centre building in Hamilton is a wonder of modernist curves and rough coloured concrete.

20240103. The foundations of the new Glen Road Pedestrian Bridge (or Morley Callaghan Footbridge) and tunnel under Bloor Street East (from December 12).
20240101. NOTICE: a change has been proposed for this site. It’s a new year and a new year of redevelopment. Here at 250 University, another 39 storeys of condo will be plopped on top of this 1958 base across from the future Osgoode station on the Ontario Line.
20231230. The singular facade of the Trocadero Tavern – on Barton Street for 75 years opening on D-Day – is currently closed indefinitely for movie shoots and rentals.
